BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE INFORMATION CENTRE

General Information

THE DATA BASE INFORMATION SYSTEM

The government has taken a keen interest in the development of Coastal Zone Management in the light of the regional coastal degradation trends, increase economic activities around the coastal areas and its significance to the quality of life of the people. The NERIC will present a system and up-to-date data on the quality of water as the project progresses and at the same, other environmental issues will be examined.

The National Metadata base used by Negara Brunei Darussalam is based on the Coastal Zone Environment and Resource Management Project Recommendation for Metadata base Documentation (July 1996) and it is based on its guideline where assembling and adapting several sources of information contributed to the explanation and application of descriptions to digital datasets. There are basically three main components in the case study:

. 1. the GIS (Geographical Information System) and DSS as the Information System,

  2. the Environmental Resource Analysis, and

  3. the Management of Coastal Environmental System

A reliable database will be expected to allow end-users ease in capturing the intended data with the result that the data structure is also user-friendly. The information in the database can be used as a gauge to any changes in  the environment around the Brunei Bay and through future studies and research,  these changes may be manipulated without compromising existing water quality or damaging the ecosystem.

The Environment Unit has a database of environmental related studies which details, among other data, the purpose of the studies, the ownership, the area, and the scopes.  This database will be updated to take into account of existing new studies, additional coverage of related environmental and land use information.

This case study will also produce an operating with associated DSS (Decision Support System) to assist in the assessment of development proposals. Appropriate support documentation will also be prepared as the case study proceeds.
