RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES FOR DISPOSAL OF WASTE BATTERIES

GENERAL TYPES

RECOMMENDED DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

1

Dry Cell Battery

·    Waste dry cell batteries should be placed in separate double polyethylene bags before disposal in landfill.

2

Lithium Battery

Small sealed type lithium battery - used in electronic equipment e.g. cameras, wrist watches etc.

Large wet type lithium battery (w/draining ports for electrolyte) – used in power back-up systems for electronic circuit boards and similar applications.

·    Lithium batteries should be handled with care. It should not be opened or burned.

·    Waste small sealed type lithium battery should be placed inside double polyethylene bags before disposal in landfill.

·    Waste large wet type lithium battery (w/draining ports for electrolyte) should be recycled. The originator of the waste must ensure the following precautions are followed.

I.   Large wet type waste lithium batteries should be stored in a well ventilated dry area at temperatures below 70ºC. The optimum storage temperature is -10ºC to + 25ºC. There is the risk of fire, explosion and burns if the lithium battery is crushed, recharged, disassembled or heated above 100ºC.

II.  Large wet type waste lithium batteries are equipped with a draining port for the electrolyte. The electrolyte must not be drained. If electrolyte come into contact with the skin flush with warm soap water.

III.  The large wet type waste lithium batteries should be fully discharged before disposal. Do not short circuit the lithium battery. This may produce high temperature and subsequent cell rupture. In case of fire use dry powder extinguisher based on graphite (LITH-X) or other suitable extinguishers designed for alkali metal fires. Water, CO2 or halon extinguishers must NOT be used.

IV. The wet type waste lithium batteries should be kept in a proper/safe storage facility until a commercial size is accumulated to be sent for recycling. Proper handling procedures should be adhered to ensure environmentally safe movement/transport of the waste batteries.
