Brunei Darussalam is currently experiencing hazy conditions caused by forest fires.According to a press release from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRE), the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) readings of air quality recorded from all the air quality monitoring stations (PM10) in the four districts yesterday were relatively higher than normal.
As of 5pm yesterday, the PSI readings were: Brunei Muara 34 (good), Belait 34 (good), Temburong 52 (moderate) and Tutong 57 (moderate). PSI readings below 50 is good and PSI between 50 and 100 is moderate.
With the ban on open burning effective August 4, 2009, the department urged the public to refrain from conducting any open burning activities that will worsen the hazy conditions.
JASTRE will continue to closely monitor the air quality and time-to-time provide updated information and advice on the air quality through the local media.
The public can contact the department for any complaints on open burning through hotlines 8999900/8837751/8837741 and query on the air quality by contacting 2383222 ext 514 during office hours. The public can also access and obtain the PSI readings online at www.env.gov.bn.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health also reminded the public, especially children, to avoid conducting outdoor activities during hazy conditions. The public is also advised to drink lots of water in view of the hot weather conditions and to consult doctors immediately if they have difficulties in breathing.
