The authorities in Belait District are coming down hard on companies who are using illegal labour.

Officers from the Belait Immigration Enforcement Section and Belait Branch of Labour Department Enforcement Section carried out inspections at several recycling companies in the district yesterday.

The joint inspection codenamed "Ops Sepadu Bungkas 151/2009" was aimed at ensuring that companies adhere to the rules and regulations of Brunei's labour and immigration laws.

At a recycling site in Kuala Belait, officers questioned two Bangladeshis and an Indonesian suspected of working for a company that was not stated in their work pass.

A Malaysian, who is holding a social visit pass, was also found working at another site. Immigration officers believe that he has been working at the site, where he was paid $20 each day for the past two years.

The three suspects were issued with special passes pending further investigation.

Officers have also issued letters to employers suspected of illegally hiring them.

Members of the public can call hotlines 3331879, 3341938 (Belait), 4221977 (Tutong), 2383555, 2383777 (Bandar Seri Begawan) and 5221222 (Temburong) if they have any information on suspected illegal immigration or labour activities.
