Established in 1993 as the Environment Unit under the Ministry of Development to serve as the secretariat to the National Committee on the Environment and coordinate matters relating to the environment.

By consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister's Office announced that His Majesty has consented to the formation of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation under the Ministry of Development where the department will also be responsible on issues of landscape and maintenance of recreational areas in the country.

The formation of the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation took effect on the 1st May 2002. Currently, the department handle matters pertaining to Waste Management, Environmental Conservation and Management, Management of Landscape and Recreational Areas and also Environmental Cooperation at National, Bilateral and International level.
