WORKSHOP ON SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING FOR COASTAL & MARINE DEVELOPMENT IN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
6 May 2025 – The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with DHI Water & Environment (B) Sdn Bhd organized the Workshop on Sustainable Environmental Planning for Coastal and Marine Development in Brunei Darussalam on 6 May 2025 at An-Naura Hall, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex.

Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Shaharuddin Khairul bin Haji Anuar, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infrastructure, Housing and Professional), Ministry of Development. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of prioritizing the protection of the coastal and marine environment as the nation continues to develop, in line with one of the key indicators of Wawasan Brunei 2035, which is to ensure a sustainable environment. He added that it is critical for developers to fully understand the requirements outlined under the Environmental Protection and Management Act, Chapter 240, for any development that has a significant environmental impact, including coastal and marine development activities.

The Opening Session continued with a Keynote Presentation delivered by Dayang Liaw Lin Ji, Country Manager of DHI Water & Environment (Brunei) Sdn Bhd and Head of Environmental Solutions of DHI Brunei and Malaysia, which among others highlighted some of the key issues and challenges that are facing coastal developments in Brunei Darussalam today and the imperative for holistic and sustainable planning to build coastal resilience against impending climate change impacts.

The one-day workshop brought together diverse experts to share best practices, challenges, and opportunities in the crucial area of sustainable planning for Brunei Darussalam's coastal and marine development. Almost 60 participants from government agencies and private companies involved in coastal and marine developments attended the workshop.
